Sixty-five percent of all new code written at Snap is now generated by AI.

Not reviewed by AI. Not assisted. Generated. The engineers ship it. The product runs. The users don't notice the difference.

On April 16, 2026, Snap announced it was eliminating 1,000 positions — 16% of its workforce — and closing 300+ open roles. The projected savings: $500 million annualized by H2 2026. One-time restructuring costs came in at $95–130 million. That's a three-to-four month payback on the full restructuring investment.

Most of the coverage will focus on the layoffs. That's the wrong thing to focus on.

The story here is the 65% number. That's the mechanism. Everything else is a consequence.

What Snap Actually Did

Snap didn't wake up one morning and decide to be ruthless. They responded to financial pressure — activist investor Irenic Capital holds a 2.5% stake and has been pushing for cost discipline — and they responded by deploying AI at operational scale, not pilot scale.

What 65% AI code generation actually means: smaller teams handling scope that previously required larger ones. Engineers still set direction, review output, and own architecture. But the boilerplate is gone. The test scaffolding is gone. The repetitive CRUD patterns that consumed two-thirds of every sprint cycle — gone.

Why This Works Now When It Didn't 18 Months Ago

3. Set a 90-day AI-output target with a cost budget. For a 10-person dev team, budget $2K–4K per month in tooling. Set a target of 30% AI-assisted output by day 90. That's well below Snap's number and well within what current tooling delivers in practice. If you hit 30%, the productivity gain covers the tooling cost in the first week of every month going forward.

You're not trying to match Snap's 65% in 90 days. You're trying to close the gap from zero to operational — which is the hard part. Everything after that is optimization.

The Window Is Open

Snap's $500M savings isn't remarkable because Snap is Snap. It's remarkable because it demonstrates that AI code generation has crossed from "interesting experiment" to "board-level financial lever."

Your number is smaller. Ten million dollars in productivity gains, not five hundred. But your ratio can actually be bigger, because you can move faster and your engineers aren't spending three weeks getting a new tool approved.

The companies that figure this out in 2026 build structural advantages that competitors can't reverse-engineer in 2027. You can hire engineers, but you can't hire the six months of workflow evolution, tooling integration, and output calibration your team will have built.
